Paper vs Purpur vs Fabric vs Forge in 2026
Which Minecraft server software is best for performance, plugins, and mods? Side-by-side comparison and recommendations.
TL;DR
| Need | Pick | |---|---| | Plugins, vanilla feel, max compatibility | Paper | | Plugins + extra gameplay tweaks | Purpur | | Mods, performance focus | Fabric | | Mods, biggest mod catalog | Forge |
Paper
A drop-in Vanilla replacement that's 3–5× faster, supports the entire Bukkit/Spigot plugin ecosystem, and ships with sane defaults. It's the default choice for a multiplayer server — survival, SMP, public hub, or community.
Wins on: stability, plugin catalog, performance, predictable behavior.
Purpur
Paper fork with extra config knobs — toggle vanilla mechanics, tweak mob AI, ride any mob, configurable end credits, etc. Same plugin compatibility as Paper.
Wins on: customization without writing plugins. Slightly slower than pure Paper because of the extra logic.
Fabric
Lightweight mod loader. Faster than Forge for the same workload thanks to leaner internals. Best paired with Lithium, Sodium (client), Lazy-DFU.
Wins on: performance modded servers, smaller curated mod lists, smaller modpacks.
Forge
The original mod loader. Largest mod catalog by far (Create, Twilight Forest, IndustrialCraft, Mekanism). Heavier — startup and per-tick overhead are noticeably bigger than Fabric.
Wins on: big tech / magic modpacks, classic modded gameplay, CurseForge packs.
What about Spigot / Bukkit?
Spigot is the predecessor to Paper. There's basically no reason to pick Spigot today — Paper is a strict performance and compatibility superset.
How to switch
On [FreeMCHost](https://new.freemchost.com), you can switch server type from the panel without losing your world — just stop the server, change the type, restart.
