How to Host a Minecraft Server for Free (2026)

Step-by-step guide to host a free Minecraft server 24/7 — Java, Bedrock, and modded. No port forwarding, no credit card.

The short answer

You don't need a beefy PC or a paid host to run a Minecraft server. A free hosting provider like FreeMCHost spins up a Java or Bedrock server in under a minute, gives you a public IP, and keeps it online without port forwarding.

Free hosting vs running it on your PC

Hosting on your own machine works, but the PC must stay on, your home IP changes, and you have to open ports on your router — every player joining is also reaching into your home network. A free host removes all of that: fixed IP, no router configuration, no exposed home network.

Step 1 — Create the server

1. Sign up on [FreeMCHost](https://new.freemchost.com) (no card required). 2. Pick the version: Paper for plugins, Forge / Fabric for mods, Bedrock for Windows / console / mobile players. 3. Click create — provisioning takes ~60 seconds and you get an IP like play.freemchost.com:25565.

Step 2 — Configure the basics

From the panel, open server.properties and set:

  • gamemode=survival (or creative / adventure)
  • difficulty=normal
  • max-players=10
  • view-distance=8 — lower = more RAM for players
  • pvp=true if you want combat

Step 3 — Invite your friends

Send them the IP. In Multiplayer → Add Server, they paste it and join. No Hamachi, no LogMeIn, no VPN trick.

Step 4 — Keep it online 24/7

Free Minecraft servers stay online as long as you renew them — on FreeMCHost it's one click every 48 hours. That's the trade-off that lets us keep the service free: ghost servers get cleaned up automatically.

Common pitfalls

  • "Can't connect" — wrong port. Java uses 25565, Bedrock uses 19132. Most panels include the port in the IP they show you.
  • Lag with 5+ players — bump to Paper (faster than Vanilla), and lower view-distance to 6.
  • Wanting mods later — switch the server type to Forge or Fabric from the panel, no migration needed.
